Hi Gary just joined the list I am in the UK ie 625, but the problems seem
much the same

The RCA digital servo was on TR61 TR70c and TCR 100
It was at its worst on TCR100 because it did not have THA  ie the time base
could not centre itself by dumping into the servo
because of the twin decks

The pinch roller capstan worked providing the roller was OK they suffered
chemical changes and became sticky
and providing you could get the correct torque on the take up I think the
motor has to draw around an amp

The TR61 digital servo was not good far too tight and touchy if it hit
physical edits that we not perfectly timed 
The 61 used to have reel problems if you ran out of control track the servo
would throw a loop and the floor mounted fan would suck in the tape

Took it up with RCA and they suggested reversing the air flow through the
fan so the tape would not be sucked in, just fell in a pile on the floor

I preferred the analogue servo if you could get the line lock module set up
correctly, but it was an art

The 70C had what we affectionately called the "Cart Machine Servo" which
used the same cards as the TCR-100.  There was a TR-60C (I think) that had
the same servos in.  Now that was scary.  The cart machine was a 2 second
lock from a ready condition.  But the TCR did not have a pinch roller and
the others did.  

It is funny that Ted and I were talking about the servo and sc/h timing just
minutes before the flood of emails on the topic.  I think Ted was wired.

These 70Cs will do 2 seconds or less, as well.  As soon as the guide 
pulls in, it locks so fast, it's scary!
The earlier 70s would do maybe 6 seconds dependably.  The good news is 
that the servos on all of them are absolutely stable and do not drift 
with temperature at all.
