"I thought the old TCRs were replaced with Panasonic MII Multiplay machines
(I forgot what they were named) around 1984 or so. If your statement is
true (and I believe you), those new TCRs must have hung on
for only about a year or so."
Dennis,
The New TCR's Machines where in service from 1985-89. The Pictures bring
back memories, the Reel to Reel in the line is a TR-70B (VC37) I changed
that out to a TCR100A before(~1983) the Stereo upgrade. The last Machine in
the line was VCR-40.
The ARPS project didn't complete until 1989, and became know as the project
from Hell. I was lucky to be part of the Korea Olympics during that period.
The NY Group tried to replace Switching Central as part of that upgrade and
ran into a stone wall.. Steve Orland, from Burbank, was brought out to NY to
oversee the warring factions, and completed the ARPS in 1989. Switching
Central was not upgraded. Panasonic ARPS was not the problem!
I never saw lip-sync problems in Telco or Skypath that didn't originate with
Film or News ENG stuff. It takes many... many miles of copper & analog gear
to make a frame.
BTW
The News ENG A/B Cut Edit suites all had Ampex ADO's ( Money was easy in
those days)
I recall that NBC news was transferring Film to tape using a "Movieolla"
(sp) in ~1983. The Film then went to Englewood Cliffs, NJ vault & all the
Film Islands where removed from 30 Rock. I don't remember the tape format,
only that it was not 1" quality
