Ampex and Sony did a deal that related to Sony's transistor experience.

There are documents about what happened over time with that  
situation.  Some think it didn't work to Ampex's long-term benefit.

Perhaps that's among the reasons the current company has been rather  
aggressive about protecting its patents, among them ones that are used  
in digital cameras, both still and moving image... DV included.

Those are likely to expire soon, and the company will not have income  
from them.
