Hi Ed:
The logo and the claim of "Trademark" appeared on numerous Ampex documents,
but was discontinued after failing to be legally registered.
The information I have from an Ampex historian is: "The term "Videotape" was
*attempted* to be registered by Ampex. However, Ampex permitted its
licensees to use logo art and a music fanfare, describing the immediately
preceding program as being Video Taped, before the term had actually been
granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Such use, coming before
registration had actually been granted, resulted in the term "Videotape"
being made a generic term, and ineligible for registration."
Literature published after the registration was denied refered for a time to
Videotape as "the brand name of Television Recorders made by the Ampex
Corporation". That phrase appears as early as 1962 although the use of the
"TM" continued to appear in some documents for several more years before it
was completely discontinued.
A check of the USPTO files does indicate that TMs were granted for other
quad related items including INTERSYNC and AMTEC. While they missed out on
the Videotape name, they did get a TM on VIDEOFILE, the gigantic system that
stored documents on videotape.

Hi Ted,
Attached is an insignia I was given with the AMPEX company name and the
AMPEX "VideoTape" trademark and logo.
It is 4 1/2- inches wide and quite thick with deep engraving. I was told it
was from a VR-1000 but cannot confirm.
I wanted to send the image to the group but don't know if attachments are
possible or if there is a separate binaries group. How can this be done?
When RCA invited Ginsburg and company to RCA, Ampex was shocked to see their
machine playing back in color.
Ampex in their lust for the color solution immediately signed the agreement
that put RCA in the VTR (Ampex trademark) business and created a competitor
to Ampex.

Also, did RCA purchase patents from Ampex or was it a trade for RCA's
transistor technology?
Ampex and Sony did a deal that related to Sony's transistor experience.
There are documents about what happened over time with that situation.
Some think it didn't work to Ampex's long-term benefit.
Perhaps that's among the reasons the current company has been rather
aggressive about protecting its patents, among them ones that are used in
digital cameras, both still and moving image... DV included.
Those are likely to expire soon, and the company will not have income from
them.
