Dennis,

Channel 30 in Atlanta is actually WPBA (Public Broadcasting Atlanta), which
is operated by the Atlanta Public Schools.

GETV (later GPTV, and now GPB) is Georgia's statewide (and state-owned)
public television network.  We consider our birth as 1960--the year WGTV in
Athens signed on.  It was actually part of the University of Georgia at the
time; the GETV network's stations were signed on one or two at a time
throughout the '60s.  From the beginning WGTV and GETV shared some
programming and resources, but were operated independently.  Then in the
early '80s GPTV took over WGTV.

Although you were watching PBA and not GETV, you may have seen some GETV
programming.  Though quad recordings are known to exist, apparently GETV had
an agreement with PBA to air GETV programs before its own stations were up
and running!

I've read that before GETV's stations were linked by microwave, tapes were
simply bicycled around the state for air on each of the eight (nine if you
count WGTV) stations!
