His legacy lives on here at the ASU Cronkite School of Journalism in
Phoenix.
As well as being an engineer, I am also a journalist... and Walter
Cronkite is the person we always considered the stand bearer when it came to
how a journalist should act...
He is missed by all of us.

Walter Cronkite left his CBS anchor chair in 1981 after 19 years. Today,
after 92 years on the planet, he left us behind for a look a whatever
adventure faces mankind at the end of our earthly presence.
Cronkite presided over what became the top ranked newscast of the 1960's
and 70's, each broadcast recorded on Quad videotape for re-feed across the
country and for time-zone delay on the West Coast.
He took over the CBS network's daily news broadcast from Douglas Edwards,
the first anchorman recorded on videotape.
His legacy lives on through reels of 2" Quad archived at CBS and other
repositories, documenting and commenting on some of America's most historic
moments in the mid-20th Century: The assassination of President John F.
Kennedy, and the results of Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon before the
end of that century's sixth decade.
During his 19 years at the helm of the CBS Evening News, Cronkite
certainly had the chance to become the man most recorded on Quad.
One can speculate about what Cronkite's reaction was to entering his new
form of existence. I think he might have echoed his summary of the first
moonwalk just 40 years ago... "Whew!" And then, with a wry tone of voice
thought, "And that's the way it is."
