A TBC on the output should take care of the "mono" issue.

I used to have an RCA-badged one, and used it with the RCA badged Sony  
BVT-2000.  Trying to remember how I connected it to recover color.   
<Draws blank. Shrugs>  Maybe it'll come to me.

Also had the rack/portable unit that allowed full connections and  
monitoring as though the deck were a studio unit, but never had the  
multi-pin cable to connect them.
