for safey - always remember a Variac is an "autotransformer" and  provides 
no electrical isolation from the powerline

It's just a cheap chinese one I bought off eBay several years  ago.  It 
has a built in voltmeter, which is nice, and is rated for 15  amps if I 
remember right.  It has a normal 110v outlet on it as  well.
So far, it works just fine.
