One of the major design differences between RCA and Ampex quads of the
VR1200/2000 and TR-70 era is the approach they take with power supplies.
RCA has several large supplies which run everything. Ampex has smaller,
individual supplies for most of the various systems in the machine. Which
approach is better is a subject for some discussion, but when it comes to
bringing up an old machine on a Variac, almost any size can be used with the
Ampex machines since you can easily control what sections are powered. For
that matter, since all the subsystems (Amtec/Colortec/Velcomp/Audio/etc) are
separate, you can plug them into variacs individually, or when you have them
out of the machine for cleaning.

One caution.....DO NOT power on the signal system and servo supplies without
load. They are shunt regulators and will dissipate all of the power in an
unpleasant manner...........
