So to amplify what Ted was saying, there were several presentations of
interest to our group. It was too bad Ted missed Friday as there were two
other topics of interest.
-Bob Schumacher talked about the digitization of the Tonight Show (Starring
Johnny Carson) for preservation and access (commercial use, but it's out
there) for most of the shows. I wasn't taking notes but of course, they
don't include the shows that were lost due to recycling (new terminology) of
the video tape. I'm sure there was plenty of quad and 1" tape in these
archives. It was pretty interesting none the less. Even though it is
commercialized, it is still preserved at the prevailing resolution.
-Ken Weissman gave us a detailed tour of the new LOC Packard Campus. Some
interesting things were offered that could have easily been lost if not
paying attention. They have started a free "juke box" web site which
contains early recordings not in copyright. Sony has provided a huge
collection of music probably 70 years old (hey, I'm getting there). It
sounds like the potential for public good still lies in hiding there. It
will only get better as time and funding goes on.
-This morning, Brian Walker discussed a potential "non Contact method for
recovering information from magnetic media. The focus was starting with
quad tape. While we all have many questions and observations, he remains
optimistic this will work well. No real details were provided due to
patents and probably too early to start talking details.
The Saving Cyd Charisse segment was awesome. Would have been nice to have
David here though. It looked great, but I probably am old enough to see the
show when it aired. I was pretty amazed that anyone in the audience saw any
of the quad flaws. What were they looking at? Ok. First line effect (is
that an RCA term?), very light scratches, some moiré. But really, what were
we looking at? And it was on a pretty large screen which really shows how
well the image holds up. Oh yes. And Cyd Charisse was in it. Now. I'm
showing my age.

The Afternoon presentations were all good, but the wrap with Ralph
Sargent explaining how the RCA Labs Color Heterodyne processor worked
was quite well explained by a good powerpoint.
Dan Wingate did a good job with David's St. Louis presentation.
Having seen it, I enjoyed the re-run... especially the added material
I don't recall seening in St. Louis... a marvelously staged and shot
dance sequence with pools of light.
Bravo David! There was some good Q&A after... and then a number of us
including Gary Adamswent to dinner at the Arclight theater up Vine
St... Talkd about Quad among other esoterica... and still made it back
in time for the sneak preview:
A 2K restoration and 2K filmout of 20th Century Fox's 1958 sci fi
thriller "The Fly" with Vincent Price and David Hedison (as Al
Hedison) in the lead role of scientist Andre Delambre.
A good time had by all.
Phoenix Monday, Tuesday. for demos. If time, hello to Ed, and maybe a
side-trip to Tucson to say hello to Harold Deppe Sr. and Jr.
May your week ahead not suffer any quadrature error that can't be
adjusted out.
