Subject: Last of the VR-000's

With the recent talk about tubes (Fire Bottles) in VTR's it reminded me of some experience I had with the last of the CBS VR-2000's.

Since I was the only person maintaining them and occasionally operating them (The regular ops wouldn't go near them) I thought I would make life a little easier for myself.

First I removed the side panels so I could get into them easier, even though they were between 2 racks. I did some work on them and came back a few days later and the panels were gone. Someone stole them. I never found them in the following years. But that is OK, it just made it easier to clean, etc. them.

I figured that since there would be no more recordings made on them, I pulled out all of the tubes in the RAPA's. This was an all day job because of all the screws Ampex put in them.

Now the whole RAPA housing was nice and cool and I could get rid of the fan on top of it, thereby not pulling schmutz thru it and no need to change the filter under it.

I then pulled out the AFA audio keying mods which were there, no need to keep them around either.

I also wanted to eliminate the Editor, Editec and VHO, but didn't have the "Dummy Plug" which came with the machine which would enable me to do so. I found I could just pull the boards out of the Editor, but had to leave the chassis in and I had to leave the boards in the Editec, but I have saved some heat in the machine to some degree.

I also pulled out the full erase chassis, just to make more room.

While I was at it I went across the street to Archives and pulled the record board out of the RAPA on the AVR-1's, pulled the erase chassis and the boards out of the time code reader and killed the power supply for the Nixie display.

I was going to jumper out all of those IBM relays behind the control panel in the AVR-1's since there is no need for remote,so I could throw them out also, as they tend to be a constant problem, there were no spares, but ran out of time, bur recommended it be done, I'm sure the guys jumped right into it. (Right!)
