on the topic of "fogged looks"...
over here in australia, just about all NTSC originated material had a "fogged" look to it in the 80's and sometimes still does even now
Saw they were re-airing ALF on 7two digital channel here at 6pm in the evenings...and i thought "ahh" i will be able to see it in as a latest NTSC to PAL digital conversion....but its still as blurry foggy looking and shimmery on movements as when it was aired back in the 80's, i dare say they are sourcing from old conversions...such a shame as some NTSC content can look almost "PAL like" when its converted well

Scott,
The cameras on Golden Girls were deliberately "fogged up" a bit (softened) if I recall correctly. I would not compare that type C recording to quad. True that some early type C suffered from poor S/N and tape stock issues. But many factors contribute to whether a certain tape can look good or not. As I mentioned earlier, type A very high band (with good cameras such as what appeared to be HL 79's in this dance segment I transferred), looked good. A properly tuned 2" quad (with all factors in place) had exceptional capability to reproduce good, sharp pictures. It just took an effort at times.

I offer:
I vaguely remember reading that The Golden Girls was the first show to be shot on BetaCam. That could possibly partly explain the look of the show.
It's important to note that Type "C" used the exact same RF bandwidth and FM deviation as quad. Therefore, as far as S/N ratio and image sharpness is concerned, there would be no measurable difference. There were of course OTHER differences between quad and Type "C", but those differences are not at issue here.
