Hi Park,
I just read this group, and remembered that I came from designing the helical editor on the VR-7800, and then moving into Product Management, designing and showing a two M/C backspace editor @ NAB, being talked out of marketing it by RWC, and then moving to California.
Note: This backspace editor predated the U-matic products by many years!!!

Then, I found out that NOBODY used "assemble editig" on Quads, since you switched from a control track locked playback to a random reference generator at the recording point!
In 1967, on the VR-7800, we used a mutli-tooth tach on the capstan, and compared it to the control track and locked to the closest pulse which caused a very good, clean move into recoded portion of Assemble edit. I could build edits all day. never a problem and have Quad folks shaking their heads and not understanding what we were doing, and realizing that they could not do on their Quads.

George,

I did that with some key employees but I was told it may not hold up in court since you can't prevent someone from earning a living. And what do you do if they refuse to sign a non-compete? Fire them?

Best,
Park

Wonder if it might be good idea to put something in the employment contract that might stop this. There was a case on the news in the past couple years where some pet shop owner had such an agreement with his employees. One of them quit and was dog walking within a few blocks, the pet business owner all but had the guy sent to Sing Sing for violating his employment contract.
