Never got that problem with the TCR 100 so luck was on our side

The Capstan motors were a problem the rollers used to degrade and would not
grip tape,

Did not help when RCA said they do not go wrong when I ordered one.

 

They sent an engineer over nice guy Bill Bowen, who changed not only the one
that was giving me trouble, but all four (two Machines)

and then rejected several of the new one RCA supplied.

 

Don't go wrong they were a major liability

I remember repairing TCRs like that!    There was a circuit in the reel
servo power amps that, when one of the drivers shorted in just the right
way, would put -80 volts on the machine's Reset Bus!  That was a LOT of
blown DTLs!

Lucky you  my company had TC100's one with 600 signal processing, and
Pinzone mods(not sure how you spell the guys name)

I spent a lot of time head clutching and when the +5 went hi and it lost
several hundred DTL chips which were then too old to source in the UK

RCA had to fly them in.................

Did not Merlin also offer stereo retrofit kits for the ACR's?  I have a
bunch of old Merlin literature and I will have to dig it out to see if that
was done.  

 

ACR-25 was a beautiful machine.  I think about it and realize the amount of
sophistication that went into the design and control system.  This was
before any computers were available for control that could really do wonders
now.

 

Ampex did a beautiful job on the design.
