I used Toluene's cousin Xylene for many years.  It was told to me that
that was the main ingredient in Ampex head cleaner.  Again, $4 a quart
versus $10 an ounce seemed like we were saving money!  Same safety
hazard, use sparingly in a well ventilated area, but it sure gets the
gunk off the heads.

 

I find it better to clean the tape before I put it on the machine, but
then I'm cleaning the cleaner the same way as the VTR!
