[QuadList] heads and wear

I saw a special "burnisher" tape used at the Ampex factory. After making the 1" heads, they were put in a scanner and this special, diamond impregnated tape was run through the machine to contour the heads.

Never saw a 2" cleaning tape. Maybe it was to burnish new heads.

Also, head wear was a big topic at the start of the 1" days. Some manufacturers had different thoughts about how abrasive to make the tape. I was told that Sony was a little more abrasive due to a request from NHK. They wanted to keep the heads from clogging so they wanted a little more friction.

It is always a tricky balance to make the tape rough enough to keep the heads clean but not too rough to wear them out.

Best,
Park
