Correcting myself......they were not 3 buttons, although they were square and looked like buttons, they were simply mode indicator lamps.  There was a single knob that selected the mode.

  The original 3-button Ampex editor was the model 1055.  I have a couple of them here (not operating!).   The manual shows an original date of '62.  Interestingly, they were used **without** H-lock servo.
