[QuadList] Assemble edits vs Insert edits (wasOMG!!!!)

I recently dubbed a low band monochrome show from 1965 that had hard records on the tape to join all the segments. Was it common back then to assemble a show with hard records??? I can understand going in with a crash if the tape was a stop-and-start camera original but for a final air master?
