Probably every industry has these issues, but how about when a technology jumps industries?

In the computer world, Dr. Catmull of Pixar invented the "alpha" channel. In TV it's a "matte", "key" or a "hole-cutter".
Move into a paint program, it can be a "selection", a "stencil" or a "mask", and the word "alpha" is thrown around too.

In Grass Valley nomenclature, they had what were called "shaped" and "unshaped" keys. In the computer world, they call it "non-premulplied" or "straight" alphas.

It seems to never get simpler or easier.

This is probably where the Quantel Digital Fact Book could come in handy. :)
