About the only connection I can make between WLW's Blaw-Knox Tower and
Quad Videotape recording is that the term Quad could be applied to the
number of faces on the tower.
Making my way today from Columbia, MO through Louisville, KY and then
north through Cincinatti toward Latrobe, PA, I had to pass through
Mason, OH on I-71.
The WLW Blaw-Knox is very easy to spot from the freeway, and I had to
check it out.
Turns out it was worthwhile, as riggers are in the process of
replacing the 747 foot tower's guy wires. I spent about 45 minutes
walking along the fence shooting pictures of the site, tower, some of
the process.
I'll post some pix as soon as I have time, and try to print a few for
perusal during our Quad Videotape Group Annual Dinner at AMIA, this
Tuesday night, Nov. 2. Also of other B-K towers at WBT-AM, Charlotte,
NC, that are also uniquely visible from a Charlotte freeway near the
airport.
At WLW, the guy wire project seems to be in the early stages. While I
was watching, it looked like they were connecting sections for and
hoisting the first guy to be replaced, so others wanting to more
thoroughly document the process appear to have several days in which
to do so. It would be interesting to know whether other guy wire
replacements have been done since the tower was erected in 1933.
WLW, 700, Cincinnati, was once licensed to use 500KW of power for
normal operation.
