Dennis.....the Sony machine predates the 440 by a year or so, but the same 
basic Ampex transport design came much earlier.  While the layout is the 
same, the actual design is different if you look "under the hood".  Notice 
that the capstan is not direct drive, it's a puck drive, but you've got to 
love the oil cup for the capstan drive motor!
