In the flower tossing scene where survivors are putting flower petals into the water, you'll see him in Dec. 6 footage in the wide shot, left hand corner of the railing dressed in a blue shirt with white horizontal stripes.

This is him, at some point during the USS Arizona Reunion Association's Tuesday visit to the Memorial.

On Dec. 7, he wore this uniform to the events in the morning and afternoon.

(John Langdell cell phone photos)

In previous years, he's worn a more formal uniform, as in this Dec. 5, 2006 US Navy photo:

Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Dec. 5, 2006) - USS Arizona survivor, retired Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Langdell returns a salute as he makes his way through an honor cordon for USS Arizona survivors. One hundred Sailors and Marines assigned to guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60), USS Russell (DDG 59) and Combat Service Support Group Three made up the honor cordon, which rendered honors to the survivors as they entered the USS Arizona Memorial Visitors Center. U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class James E. Foehl (RELEASED)

To my knowledge, he's never been recorded on Quad tape... but has been preserved professionally on 3/4", Betacam, BetacamSP, Mini-DV, DVCAM, DVCPro, HDV and possibly HDCAM-SR when the National Park Service was documenting the 65th Commemoration events HD, including the USS Arizona Reunion Association's visits to the Memorial before and on Dec. 7, 2006.

To all our veterans on the list, thank you for serving, wherever your service time took you and whatever your role.

I hope that your stories have been preserved for future family members and researchers... even if by no other means than pointing a video camera at yourself and telling "how it was," or by preserving those thoughts in writing on paper (or computer text files you print to have a paper protection copy.)

It gives context to the general history of our country by preserving the thoughts and actions of the people who live in it in.

It also helps provide future generations with some reasons to think about why and how to ensure that our ability to enjoy what we call "freedom" is preserved and protected from enemies within and without.

I worry that our citizenry is becoming so focused on trivial things that they are not seeing what's happening outside their immediate activities. It's like burying your head in a book while the car is passing through beautiful (or abominable) countryside.

Helping to preserve our media archives helps get the eyeballs out of the book and looking at what's gone before, and how we got to where we are today... so we can do the things that are beneficial to protecting the freedoms we enjoy, and avoid repeating the things that aren't.

Again, thanks!

Ted
