Hi List
I had the pleasure of meeting John Henshall back in November when he was working on a programme about BBC Television Centre with Richard Turley. He arrived here with a lot of trepidation as to whether he had the right tape or not. Anyway we put the reel on an AVR2 and were blessed with pictures straight out of the box. No baking , no cleaning , just great pictures and sound. We did one pass of the tape straight to Digital Betacam and this what we see today.
In some ways Richard Turley is responsible for discovering John Henshall and his rare performance. John Henshall had a copy of the material because he was responsible for making the "Fish Eye" swivelling lenses and the "Multiple Prismatic" lenses and he persuaded some one in BBC VT to make a copy as a sales tool for his lenses. On this tape there was also a ladies daytime programme from Southern Television with John Junkin showing the lenses mounted on a Marconi camera.
So yes it was a Quad tape, and it was recorded as an insert into Top of the Pops, complete with clock.
I am pleased to have helped preserve an iconic performance, it does seem a shame that John has received no financial benefit from saving this material.
John Henshall does have some photos of the occasion, I will see if I can post one.

Attention David Bowie fans!
A recently rediscovered David Bowie Top of the Pops performance has been shown on television for the first time since it was originally broadcast in 1973. What appears to be a 2" quad reel is shown during the interview segment.
It was believed that every recording of the singer performing Jean Genie had been destroyed.

Happy Holidays!
