Park Seward dug up some stock footage showing AFRTS Quads in action...
but the e-mail from the stock footage house got caught in our spam-
catcher.

Here's the link:

Googling "AFRTS Videotape Operations" pulled up this link to a book
about AFRTS, "Brass Button Broadcasters:"
http://books.google.com/books?id=ReTPdXI6ynoC&pg=PA88&lpg=PA88&dq=AFRTS+Videotape+operations&source=bl&ots=DeCWOTK-IU&sig=UkZgTPodZEQc2w_VSDYXRzieBc0&hl=en&ei=SK1iTe3lIoGasAPz1bi_CA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBYQ6AEwAQ#v
=onepage&q=AFRTS%20Videotape%20operations&f=false

You may need to copy and paste the link above. Interesting read about
the Kinescope situation...
Page 96 mentions the Ramstein television facility and that it took
over the studios on July 4, 1972... AFN's 29th birthday.

Here are links to the main pages for AFRTS at 50 years, and
http://afrts.dodmedia.osd.mil/heritage/page.asp?pg=50-years

AFRTS at 60:

And AFRTS in 1961:

And here's a recent broadcast systems maint. training Course:

And to bring this back to one of the original threads in this extended
family, there might be a copy of the first NFC/AFC Championship game
on tape in an AFRTS archive, somewhere. This press release about live
coverage in 2010 on AFN says:
http://www.usf-iraq.com/news/headlines/deployed-troops-get-super-bowl-via-live-feed

Televised Super Bowl coverage was limited at first to videotape copies
of the game distributed after the fact to overseas outlets, unless AFN
outlets contracted with commercial networks to get the game live. That
all changed in 1982, when AFRTS stood up its satellite network,
enabling it to provide live Super Bowl broadcasts to all troops
overseas.

Maybe... someone will find a copy.
