I think you may have just proved that it *IS* an Octaplex recorder.  Look at the pic below of one of the RCA Octaplex headwheels that I have.  I tried to take it from about the same angle as the shot you have of the head.  Your pic is a bit fuzzy, but there are some very distinctive features of this headwheel that I think you will agree match up exactly.  Now.....if that is the case.....I still have to wonder......WHY???

  If in fact that this was some variant of an octoplex head, it sure would be an engineering feat to fit it on such a small transport. I've seen documents on RCA's earlier designs, and they are not small.
