[QuadList] 2" tape separator

Does anybody know what was used as the separator to prevent the 2" tape from sticking together in the reels? 
 
Somebody told me a long time ago that it was boiled Castor oil, but I never really had a chance to confirm it. 
 
Have a few tapes that somebody used alcohol once to get it through the machine and now the tape sticks together when I am trying to shuttle or play them in my AVR3.
