[QuadList] Fwd: OFF LIST Quad machines at CBS New York-AVR-1 in PAL mode

You are likely way ahead of me on this however here is some input re an AVR-1 in PAL.
AT the TV station I worked for in 1978 we had to use four AVR-1's in PAL mode for record only. (however we also played back for verification) They were about five years old and had only been used for NTSC. They all switched fine with no problems. I had been on the course so I had those great block diagrams and I traced all the controls from the PAL switch. Many boards had a relay switching in different circuits. I wish I still had all those manuals and notes. It was for a sporting event so it was very time sensitive and I wanted to be ready for whatever might not work as I had no PAL experience. I had called Ampex tech support before hand for any pre-help they might offer. They said it was designed to switch and work however because it shipped to a NTSC region it was most likes only final system tested in NTSC. I do not recall having to trade out any boards?
As a side note one of those AVR-1's was purchased by Archives Canada (I think they have four in total)

Ted,

I copied "Ted Williams" on this e-mail but it bounced back to me as "undeliverable" or something like that, so am sending it to him via the list.

Note, I received a reply from Barry that he is passing it on to his crew.

George Keller

Lee,

I forwarded this to Barry Zegel, I told him I don't remember if that board has signals looping thru it so if it were removed it might disable the machine. I don't think there are any "Good Spare" boards for the AVR-1 in NYC.

Hope this helps.

Hello George,

I was just wondering if you knew if they might have a #118 card in spares for the AVR1's ?

The 118 card allows a NTSC AVR1 to become a PAL.

TV City has a few historic PAL tapes that they would like to transfer over and get the client off there back.

They would only need to borrow the card for a few days then return it.(IF there is one.)

Who should Barry call to ask for somebody to check?

Thanks for the info.

Lee

Well, there were 3 VR-2000's in archives and 2 working AVR-1's there also. When I was back last Dec for the VT Maint xmas party both AVR-1's were still running but the 2000's had been moved to either NJ or NC or wherever along with most of the Archives.I was the only one in the whole place who maintained them.

The 2000's were running fine for years, but were moved to archives a few years ago, and one was dropped in the move. None of them were hooked up, over my objections and the last time I saw them were covered with schmootz.

There were also 6 or 7 lockers jam packed with 2000 parts.

I don't know if they want too part with any parts, I had a conversation with one of the VP's a long time ago that they were there, but thought they might be sent to Barry Zegel (My old boss and good friend) at TV city.

This is why I am laying low about this subj. Have been retired over 2 years so I don't have a handle on the subj. Wish I could be of some help.

Apologies.

DE,

George Keller

There are a number of them. QuadList member George Keller was maintaining them for quite a while.

Does anybody know if CBS TV in New York still have any quad machines?

I know TV City in Los Angeles has a couple, but are there any left on the east coast?

Looking for some parts.

Thanks
