Whatever you investigate, make a good comparison to ensure you're
comparing feature-for-feature so you're able to get a good sense of
the differences between the systems and what they were designed to do.
That'll also give you a list of things you'd need in addition to what
a particular vendor offers. Might be machines on the front end,
computers in the middle, additional QC software, storage and content
management on the back.
Labor costs are also a factor.
How much work does it take to prep a tape for proper playback?
How much work does it take to QC each file?
And how much work does it take to get and keep the hardware and
software systems running?
Your analysis of different approaches to yield cost per tape migrated,
cost per file produced and verified quality per file may show you that
what seems like a more expensive proposition at first is actually a
better financial and customer-centric proposition in the long run.
And if you can spread out the cost of the migration system over time,
you can affect the cost per tape/cost per file for your immediate
client, and for future clients.
Everybody's looking for a bargain, but as my dad often said when the
family home furnishings business was open: "The bitterness of poor
quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten."
That applies to the process you eventually choose and what I call
"associated hassle factors" as well as the products it produces for
your clients.
Too much hassle means you're futzing with stuff at the expense of
completing jobs or bringing in more business... all of which affect
your bottom line.
Hope this is helpful.
