Hi Chris:
I have a VR-1200 that has a mod so that in H-lock mode, it functions exactly
as you have described for the RCA LineLock. It's a small circuit board
added in the control panel. Basically an NE555 timer controlling mode
selection when Play is activated and the servo selector is set for H-lock
mode.
Problem tapes often have play back in horiz on the paperwork
Ok for an Ampex, but for an RCA they are best played in Pixlock
The RCA servo's or at least the analogue ones are poor at recovering from
disturbances in Line Lock
The logic was that Servo lock could be regained quicker if the tape could be
sycronised with station horizontal reference only
Rather than going through the full frame lock loop, and for Ampex that might
be the case, but for RCA this was not the case
Remember this advice is coming from a Pal Country, and may not be the case
for NTSC
