Yes, there was discussion of the Grateful Dead machine on the Ampex list, 
complete with a couple of different pictures.  It was not a VR-1000....it 
was a VR-1200 frame fitted with, as you said, MM-1000 electronics, 
apparently to take advantage of the smaller footprint of the VR vs the MM 
configuration.
