Two methods I remember were the DATE system which encoded QPSK audio
into the video and worked well on quad. This was implemented by PBS to
send four channels of audio. Of course, outboard encoders and decoders
were needed.
The other was called 'Sound in Sync' and put a burst of digital data on
the horizontal sync tip. Some machines didn't like it too well and a
variation was used where the data was put on the 'front porch' of the
horizontal sync interval. These were developed by the telephone company
to get audio along with the video for no lip sync error, but subcarrier
transmission beat them out for cost and simplicity.

Digital Audio on Quad, Well Merlin did that with model called "VISA"
Vertical interval stereo audio, it was developed first for data for
testing the F-15 for the US Air Force.
Merlin also did the dual audio for MTV on ACR25 by using the audio
stacks and audio boards from the AVR-3 mounted in a external rack
mounted box.
End.

I just came across the discussion about digital audio on Quad.
In Australia it was necessary to have Stereo audio on ACR25 machines for
commercial replay to air.
This was accomplished by using a unit called "VIMCAS" made by IRT
electronics in Sydney and put a digital audio track in vertical
blanking.
The unit gave a stereo pair and was common in the networks here.
