Magnetic Tape Turns 60 - Forbes
This year, 2012, digital plastic substrate magnetic tape turns 60 years
old. The _IBM_ (http://www.forbes.com/companies/ibm/) 726 digital tape drive
was introduced in 1952 to provide larger amounts of digital storage for
computers, in particular IBM’s 701 computer. Before the introduction of magnet
ic tape, digital storage for early computers used punched cards, paper
tape as well as more exotic technologies such as mercury delay lines and the
phosphors on cathode ray tubes.
