Here are a couple photos that may further illustrate the earlier posting about the magnetic dropouts introduced onto a tape by RCAs air cushion tape guide holes  becoming clogged with magnetic oxide material . 

  

This guide was replaced on a TR-22 many years ago: 

  

first photo is a close-up taken at 3 inches back 

sceond photo is pulled straight back about 12 inches, holes arent even visible at that point. 

  

I'm amazed how tiny those holes are, or what kind of drill made them, if it was a drill.
