Very interesting!
In many ways, a VR2000 is a better choice than an AVR-1, except in a few
special cases. The AVR-1 is a complex, finicky beast that makes superb
pictures when it works well, but is a nightmare when it doesn't. It uses
quite a number of parts made of unobtanium.
The VR2000 or 1200 IMHO can make pictures just as good, especially with
some of the late model digital timebase correctors that are floating
around out there. These machines are much simpler, less finicky and more
forgiving of less-than-optimal maintenance.
I have an AVR-1, a VR1200 and a VR2000, all in useable condition. (And
James Snyder of the LoC saw them with his own eyes last April). So, I
can share this from firsthand experience.

Hi Guys,
About a year ago, James O'Neal of Television Technology contacted me.
He wanted to know if I knew of an Ampex AVR-1 that could be directed to
the LOC.
He was suggesting to them that they should have an AVR- 1 in their
restoration stable.
I am truly surprised that the LOC is using 2000's instead of the much
better performing AVR-1.
Can we work together to get an AVR-1 to them?
