IRT electronics in Australia developed a stereo system for MTV when they
started to allow stereo on their quad cart machines.
The system was also commonly used by the networks in Australia.
I have some details of the system somewhere and I'll post them when I
find them.

We dabbled a short time in the early 70s with L+R on the main track and
L-R on the cue. I think it was for the Illinois High School Orchestra
competitions. Don't remember much, but the competition was in Chicago
and used WTTWs truck and quads and audio aired on WBEZ. (Maybe - it's
all a little foggy after all this time).

Hello Mitch,
When NBC Burbank went stereo throughout the plant via the new Master
Grid NEC router, stereo was handled via L+R and L-R per New York
directive. It was determined to be a mess and was abandoned around 1983.

A picture of NEC's router and mention of the use in Burbank is mentioned
on the inside front cover of this Broadcast Engineering issue:

/BE-1979-05.pdf
David,
Were tapes recorded with this "sum/difference" audio? I would imagine
that would make for a fun time when one of these is encountered in an
archive.
The April/May 1976 issue of RCA Engineer has a comprehensive package of
articles on NBC NY's facilities for switching, transmission and machine
control:
http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-RCA-Engineer/1976-04-05.pdf
On Page 42, there's an article about how Pulse Code Modulation was used
to put four audio channels into the video for routing within the NY
facilities. What happens at VTRs is described. There were 44 VTRs and
cart machines in NY at the time.
See next post about what else is in the BE issue.
Cheers,
Ted
