[QuadList] Quad tapes restoration in Brazil

Hi Ted,

Usually tapes are recorded in PAL-M in Brazil, all formats, Quad, Type B, Type C and U-matics, until late 90's only PAL-M equipments was allowed (by law) to be used. Only after Betacam adoption NTSC becomes allowed as alternative system, converted to PAL-M before broadcasting.
About 1inch tapes, type C was very large adopted, mainly Sony BVH 1100 and RCA OEM TH-200, some few TV stations used Bosch equipments (also PAL-M).

At TV Cultura, they have two TR-70 fully working and more one only for rewind and clean tapes, using toilet paper when needed (fun but a little shameful).

Best regards,

Hi, Adair,

Thanks for the links. An interesting read.

Are all the tapes mainly PAL-M, or just the Umatic?

I see that BCN is mention as the 1" format.

There seems to be a TR-70 being used as a tape cleaner. Do I see rolls of toilet paper being used as a cleaning surface? Or has someone had Pellon material cut at wider than 2" and rolled up?

That would be useful.

Ted

Hi everyone,

Here at Sao Paulo Brazil, has a public broadcast television station
called TV Cultura, they are running a amazing job of restoration. With two
RCA TR70 fully operational plus a rewind unit, they are digitizing from
Quad 2", 1", Betacam and U-Matic tapes
(mainly Pal-M) to Quicktime mov archives and then to LTO backup tapes, at
total around 130,000 hours of programs, it is an epic job for generations
to come. They "un-retired" some old engineers in order to teach new ones
and does this job. Unfortunately these
old videos are available only by order, not free at web.
