Close, I escaped High School in 75.

The posts here recently about Kruschev's visit to Des Moines were
especially interesting to me because during an exploratory expedition
around WOI I found a 16mm Kinescope of the local stations Kruschev
coverage. WOI, being owned by an educational institution, used to make a
lot of educational films with their television equipment for local
schools around the state so they owned a Kinescope recorder. The studios
even had separate light up signs that said 'ON AIR' and 'KINESCOPE.' I
really couldn't tell what may have originated on videotape. After it's
been crushed to film it all looks the same.

This would have been 1979 or 1980, the film was in good shape at that
time. The other post referring to CBS 'scooping' the other networks was
humorous to me since that film revealed that, at least on the local
level, all the stations aired the same coverage. Each station was
assigned a location. One was at the airport, one was at the farm, don't
recall where the other one was but everybody carried every location.
Pool coverage all the way.

The state sold the station a few years ago. I wonder what happened to
their archive. (There was even old equipment down there. Including wire
recorders. Wonder how they got pictures out of those? ;)
