Hi Ed,
I'm continuing to have problems with this list via G Mail. I don't know if
you will be able to read this from the Quad List.
Each of these vintage tape format recoveries does depend on the physical
nature of the tape stock. Generally speaking, A format stock issues are
compounded by the guide situation (different tape geometry on every guide
engagement potentially). Except for the VPR-1 transport, the handling of tape is
somewhat rough at times. Since it can generally be agreed upon that 1"
helical videotape formulations were a learning experience at that time from a
manufacturing standpoint, tape quality out of the box, it's ability to
survive the rigors of an A-format transport usage and long-term archival
survivability were moving targets in my opinion. Over the years, each tape
manufacture made improvements in 1" helical stock (3M the greatest in my opinion).
When type C was adopted, then we really saw 1" stock become professional
with further improvements.
EIAJ tape stock has not been as problematic for us being a later format
but it can have it's challenges, especially when Karex is encountered.

We regularly do type A transfers. We have VR-7800, VPR-7900 and VPR-1's
in their original A format.
There never is a lack of surprises with the A format and pre-A format
recordings.
One A format issue is the deterioration of the tape stock. Other problem
issues usually point to the lack of basic good engineering standards when
the recording was made i.e. the operator did not know what he/she was doing.
According to Jim Wheeler, the first use of the AST was the 7800 or 7900
machine although it may have been a prototype only.
Best Regards,
David Crosthwait
