The VPR-7900 also allowed you to select head crossover positions for compatibility with the "old" standard. Control track was also selectable between the "old standard" 60 Hz and the "new standard" of 30 Hz (or 12.5 Hz for PAL).
To tie this thread back to a quad related subject, here's a picture of a VPR-7900 with the TBC-790. The quad relationship is that the TBC-790 uses some of the same modules as the AVR-1 (but with different trim).

The VPR-1 had a provision to either frame up the machine vertically when playing the older style "dropout" signature tapes on the bottom of the screen or the later recordings with the dropout (head switch) in the vertical interval.
