QuadList member Joe Snelson (Oct. 20, 2011) has been re-elected as the National President of the Society of Broadcast Engineers, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Snelson is VP of Engineering for the broadcast arm of print, digital and broadcast group owner Meredith Corp. and is headquartered at the company's Las Vegas market Fox affiliate, KVVU-TV, Henderson, NV. He holds SBE CPBE and 8-VSB certifications

During the SBE annual membership meeting in Verona New York last month, Snelson announced that the SBE will work to attract and serve those who work in technical broadcast and media related positions, in addition to its traditional broadcast engineering membership base.

"There is hardly anything our members do today that isn't dependent on computers and computer networks. SBE members have had to add to their skills and knowledge base to handle these demands," Snelson said. "At the same time, broadcast stations have brought on IT and other specialists and we will now seek to encourage them to take part in activities and programs of the SBE."

"We feel that the addition fo these technical professionals can be a win – win for them and the Society, providing them with educational and certification and other career development opportunities while providing the SBE with a broader membership base," he emphasized.

To help communicate the wider scope of responsibilities and membership within its ranks, the SBE unveiled a new tag line it will use in conjunction with its name: "The Association of Broadcast and Multimedia Technical Professionals," which Snelson said will help to better describe who and what the Society of Broadcast Engineers is.

Snelson's address from the meeting was streamed live to members via the internet.

He announced that the SBE will be producing information on technical careers in broadcasting for use in high schools and colleges and seek to attract young people to the field. The SBE will also be providing mentoring support for members and more support for its chapters, including chapter programming support and administrative help for local chapter leadership. The archived video of the full membership meeting is available on-line.
The Society of Broadcast Engineers is the professional organization of television and radio engineers and those in related fields. SBE has more than 5,000 members in 114 chapters across the United States and in Hong Kong. There are also members in 30 other countries. Most chapters meet monthly and offer educational programs and an opportunity to network with other broadcast technical professionals. SBE offers the preeminent technical broadcast certification program in the U.S. and an expansive list of educational programs for broadcast engineers, operators, technicians, and broadcast IT professionals.

A long-time television engineer, Snelson has been with Meredith since 1980, joining the company's KCTV(TV) in Kansas City.

He graduated from Los Angeles City College with an Associate in Arts degree in broadcasting technology. He began his broadcast engineering career in the Los Angeles market in the early 1970s at KHOF-TV. 30, San Bernardino, California, which at the time had a mix of Quad VTRs including rare Visual Allen VA-50 VTRs that featured a German Bosch transport and head assembly married to Visual/Allen electronics.

The story of these Quads is told by the machines' signal system designer Al Sturm, in an updated page just reposted to the Quad Videotape Group website.

Joe supplied this picture of a pair of VA-50s from his collection. The transport of an Ampex VR-1000 is in the lower right hand corner of the image.

QuadList Member Dennis Ray Wingo also worked at KHOF-TV.

And that's your "Who's making news among Quad Videotape Group Members" update for today.

Cheers from Northern California,

Ted
