You are right.  But there were times when we had to pick and choose between a VR-1200B, AVR-2, or a TR-60.  Some of the practices were terrible out there.  The worst were TV stations.  I remember having a station send the production guy and a engineer 250 miles from upper lower Michigan to try to finish a commercial.  I spent a couple of hours teaching how to get quality out of a quad.  Did it set in?  Probably not.  Just throw up a tape and hit play.
