I read the article last week when it was noted elsewhere, and I scratched my head.

Had to wonder if the reporter misunderstood, the person he talked to didn’t have complete info (or maybe that’s all Iron Mountain was sent?) or whether that’s because they were 24/7 and trying to just keep a record… an “air check” if you will, where the quality didn’t need to be broadcast quality.

I believe I’ve seen program-quality heritage materials incorporated into other programs, so one might think that 2” Quad and 1” Type C materials exist if Betacam and/or BetacamSP was not in use at the time of the original production.

One would hope that there’s higher quality then VHS, and if it is VHS it’s at SP speed.

>> The network, which is owned by Viacom, has begun digitizing old VHS tapes that contain everything from interviews and live performances over the course of MTV's 35 years, according to Bloomberg. And it's all taking place in a Hollywood facility owned by Boston-based record storage firm Iron Mountain Inc. (NYSE: IRM).

MTV Raps and Total Request Live, as well as footage from the red carpets of major awards shows, behind-the-scenes at music festivals and interviews with major political and cultural figures.
