I wasn't working in tv at the time but the hype I recall was that the
split track audio employed Dolby A noise reduction to clean it up
somewhat. Also, the stereo audio was sent as an FM baseband Dolby FM (25
uS pre-emphasis Dolby B encoded) signal. Cable companies could modulate
a cable FM generator directly with the signal. You had to have a
standard FM receiver hooked up to your cable to tune in the FM
simulcast. MTV even gave away little stickers for you to stick on your
radio to remind you where the simulcast was.
