It appears that we have 207 folks who have at one time or another subscribed to the list, and 200 email addresses that are currently receiving emails. Two of those receiving emails are are no longer with their company but the email address is not bouncing, or they have passed away in 2017 as in the case of Kyle Bookholtz. So I think we can safely say we have 198 subscribers that are actively receiving any messages you post. I have two projects on the agenda for the QuadList in 2018. One is to add several additional administrators to the list, so that if something happens to me, things will carry-on. The other is to migrate the subscriber addresses to the groups.io platform. That's more of a challenge perhaps, since MailMan (our current listserv software) does not have a subscriber list export function. The migration could be done manually by going through the subscriber list and manually inserting first and last names and email addresses into a spreadsheet. I will be working with groups.io folks to see if they have any ideas that can make the migration a less cumbersome and much faster process. Groups.io seems to be working well for another group that a number of us are subscribed to, and a major multi-list operation is just relocated to that platform. We have had https://groups.io/g/QuadVideotapeGroup set up and in testing. One of the beneficial things is that post made to the Quad Videotape Group Facebook page automatically show up in the groups.io postings to the list and on the website. So, if you are interested in being an additional administrator, or perhaps helping with migrating the list, please give me a shout off list: ted at quadvideotapegroup.com Anyone interested in expanding the depth of information available on the Quad Videotape Group website at www.quadVideotapeGroup.com is also welcome to let me know. The site is in WordPress, which is fairly easy to learn and use. Again, Happy New Year to you! Cheers from Northern California. First thing to do is to go to manual mode on the guide servo. Set the guide with the know on the control panel. Then look at demod out on the picture monitor. It should be nice and steady with no skewing. IF everything works, you have eliminated all the circuits except for board 12. Machine will work fine this way with out any issues. AMTEC should not need any attention because it only indicates issues with other parts of the machine. If it is going crazy look at the demod to insure that the guide is not oscillating back and forth. or look at the drum error to see if the machine has instability. Adjust the two knobs on the front panel of the intersync to improve the drum stability if needed. Otherwise the machine is approaching good working order. The lockup that you describe is very good. Nice to see one get there in less than two seconds. Chris -----Original Message----- From: Shai Drori To: OldVTRS Sent: Tue, Jan 30, 2018 8:26 am Subject: Re: [OldVTRS] VR-1200 update Latest update. The compatibility may be an issue. The following needs verification by an AMPEX person. Here are some hints about board compatibility. Boards have an assembly number on them. It then ends in a -xx number with possibly a letter following these two digits. I was told that if the board has the same assembly number before the dash it is okay to swap. The dash xx is the version of the artwork. The letter following will be a revision to parts on the same artwork. If the assembly number is different, then the board is not plug compatible. There is a wiring change to the plug or harness. THIS MEANS SMOKE MAY COME OUT OF THE MACHINE! Everyone is saying the same thing. Get the machine working in basic modes before these wild crazy ideas of swapping assemblies or boards. You will only dig the grave for the machine by doing the swaps. There are way too many subtle difference between machines that you will not know unless you have very good documentation and all service notes from AMPEX including FEBs and parts changes. I do not know them. I have a short list and that is it. The documentation that I have is for the near the end of the B versions. I do have a short list of FEBs in a training manual but that does not cover everything. There were special kits that were available to fix problems in editing. I had to put these in. But they were not listed on the FEBs so it is be careful. After posting gmail notified me of new replies and after reading them I think the best course of action would be to swap board 12 and see what happens, and if all is well add auto chroma later. The B machine is not a machine anymore. I had to move 18 months ago and had to disassemble the B machine. I didn't know that the other machine en route is an A, thought it was another B. So I have an A machine and lots of spares from a B machine. I'm not so good at trouble shooting electronics myself. I have the equipment and some know how but not enough to know what to look for. I now know it's heat induced so can look further with all your help. Tip projection is always done manually here unless there are special circumstances. As for the shoe being to close or too far, I was under the impression that the shoe can only be in the right spot if I have no curvature of the picture. I check for that with both monitoring the demod out where I can see the actual error and by looking at the Amtec error that shows a flat line instead for a hill or dale, when the shoe is in the right place. If it works when cold, then I?d suspect a transistor failure. Once it has heated up and failed, you can easily go thru it with a scope and find the problem. He has a whole series of videos on the process, but this one goes a step further. He has developed an interface for it to work with a Sony edit controller! There are also images of other old video gear, apparently assembled at a show of some sort, maybe by a group of fellow collectors. In any case, this must be a one-of-a-kind project, and his other videos are interesting too. Unfortunately, nothing in English, but as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words! I assume that the relay you are referring to is K2 on the guide servo chassis. With the front panel guide mode switch set to Auto, the illumination level of the Auto switch cap should change between bright and dim as the K2 relay is changing. You should verify the proper setup of the Signal System (NOT Servo) module 12 and repair if needed. There is no warning light for the lock status of Bd 12 other than the proper functioning of the guide servo Auto mode. Please see the replies from myself and from Chris. We both suggest that you look at Board 12 in the signal system. That is what is controlling the guide servo. If it works when cold, then I?d suspect a transistor failure. Once it has heated up and failed, you can easily go thru it with a scope and find the problem.
