[QuadList] Question about PAL-M Quad players

Can I throw in my thoughts living in a PAL county (UK)

 

TR600’s were very modular and I am sure that Pal M boards existed however it
not a reliable machine and has very tight digital servo’s which might not be
ideal for archive recovery

 

The subcarrier frequency for PAL M is 3.575612 MHz.  I would have thought
NTSC machines would not suffer moiré using this subcarrier frequency

 

 

Phase alternation is applied on a line by line and has  burst blanking
[Bruch] sequence 

 

    Burst absent on following lines:-

        Fields 1. 5        1 to 8, 260 to 262

                  2, 6        263 to 270, 522 to 525

                  3, 7        1 to 7, 259 to 262

                  4, 8        259 to 262, 523 to 525

 

This may impact onto the servo’s as it creates a minimum field sequence of 4
frames in the servo lock

 

 

Also be interested in how old the PAL M tapes are and what stock they were
recorded on old tape do suffer moisture, and of course 420 and Chroma 90 had
white powder problems in the UK

Again interested to know if the USA had similar problems, was this not what
killed the Andy Williams show recovery

 

If all else fails we could reduce the servo lock to tone wheel (I am sure
there is an Ampex word for it and recover the video at demod  or MATC out
and externally  correct and clean up the colour or should that be color. 

 

Interesting project with many options and needs researching if PAL M
machines have now disappeared

I  installed a few TR-600 Pal-M machines in Brazil.  Now, I’ve forgotten
more than I remember (that’s a result of something else I don’t recall)
.

 

The bandwidth would be about the same as 525.  The output encoding is what
is different, so there are a number of different boards required as I recall
(or don’t) J  The term MOIRE comes to mind.

 

The machines I saw were in Sao Paulo and Puerto Alegre.

I used to do a lot of work for Brazil and we would just make everything in
NTSC and transcode to PAL-M at transmission.  This was due to so little
equipment being available in the PAL-M format.  If the quad tapes are
actually in PAL-M there are some later model Ampex AVR-2 or RCA TR-600
machines that can be made to play in PAL-M.  I have a working TR-600 that I
believe may have that format on the demod, but I would need a PAL-M sync
generator to playback properly.

Hello to all,
I am new to the list. I have spoken with Ted a few times and he has been
very helpful.
I work as the Preservation Director of the Cinemateca Brasileira (Brazilian
Film Archives). 
We have a few thousand reels of 2 inch tape from early brazilian television
that we need to migrate. We know that the tapes are all PAL-M, which is the
early format of brazilian TV (now all is NTSC). I did see a Quad machine in
the States, but it was NTSC. 
Does anyone know of a machine that we could purchase in the States that
would play PAL-M tapes? 
I have someone that can work and fix machines, so even if it is not working,
this person might be able to fix it.
I would appreciate any help.
