I never had any real problems with the Scotch 179/379 brown stock on Andy Williams LBC's using the AVR-1. And this went back to show # 1 in 1962. Each make of stock has predictable issues and our experience base automatically steers us in the preparation process. I have seen some very butchered up transfers out of another local house done in the 80's where apparently someone either wasn't watching the transfer or just was wasn't technically proficient. We know what to expect with regard to some LBC recordings from certain network facilities. It just comes with the job.



I never had to bake Scotch 179/379 stock as it's binder is not conducive to stickiness in my experience. Chroma 90, later 400, 420, and Ampex stock is another issue. I do realize that everyone has had different experiences around the globe.

Having personally transferred many of the
Andy Williams tapes from the 60’s on old brown 3M I will tell you that it
was a challenge, but through baking and cleaning
 we got the powder (which is
hyaluronic acid from the moisture reaction with the binder) off and made good
transfers.



 



I’m still fighting some Ampex 195
that is more like chewing gum than tape!

It was rumored that
Andy Williams show ran into White Powder clogs (not involved only a story) and
could not be recovered



I will see if
 I can
track the source of the story down



I have never had
either a Chroma 90 or 3m’s 420 that I could not recover, worst case is it
came off in sections and needed a little editing



 



BBC engineers made a
Christmas tape called White Powder Christmas (chroma 90) and another called
Good king Memorex



Seems to have be
taken of you tube, but rip scratch from Good king Memorex is still on the VT
old Boys site

Are you sure about this? I transferred several hundred Andy Williams shows
several years ago for Andy's son Bobby. Very few of them were on Memorex Chroma
90 (a known sticky tape source), and I never encountered one that I could not
fully recover. 



Just curious to know about this story.
