[QuadList] TBC

Hi Doug:

Yes, I have had a TBC connected to the output of Amtec. In fact, I tried a variety of TBC's with a variety of results. Obviously, the lower end TBC's intended for helical use have limited bandwidth and it shows. On the other hand, an Ampex TBC-7 did a nice job, but the only reason to do this that I am aware of is if, as someone else pointed out, the tape will not H-Lock. The signal quality of the original analog path (Amtec/Velcomp/Colortec) is quite good if it is set up properly and it tends to stay that way for years. Some of the differences between the analog and digital processing are more easily seen with test signals than with program material, and of course, the digital processing does introduce the possibility of problems that don't exist in the analog chain.

A couple of people have asked why I am considering a TBC - Actually, it is an academic question since I plan to restore my machine to original specs. For my purposes installing a modern TBC would be like dropping a chevy automatic into a 1949 MG; effective, but kind of missing the point of buying the beast in the first place.

But I wondered about whether the addition of an outboard TBC would make the older machines a better alternative than a newer AVR-1 or AVR-2. The AVR1 used to be able to play back a lot of substandard tapes which would not lock on a 1200 or 2000. But an AVR-1 is an immense beast and both use custom IC's and other unobtainium parts,

Chris Hill has pointed out that perhaps taking the output of the AMTEC would be a good starting point. Is that feasible, or would you have to go later into the chain?

Don and Park mention the Merlin mod- It seems to lock up quick as a bunny, and obviously does a good job with the video - Is the mod solely the TBC or does it go into the servos as well? What exactly did the mod involve?

  Cheers,

  Doug
