Great discourse, Allan.

However, if I only had one chance to transfer a quad tape that was  
falling apart, I would want one of those expensive grey hairs doing it.

For tapes that were in good shape, you could run several at a time  
using several machines. Your labor costs then drops dramatically.

I do shutter at the thought of an automated process that causes errors  
that is not discovered until years later and many of the processed  
tapes were not considered useable and the originals had been discarded  
or had fallen apart.
