Don,
WGN only did one evening news show, at 9:00. So there wasn't
the kind of crunch stations doing a 5:00 or 6:00 show would experience.
Before working at WGN, I worked at a station that played 2850s to air
for news using CVS 500s and CVS 520s and we didn't find it particularly
burdensome, but that was not the mindset around 'GN at the time. In fact,
I believe most of the Chicagoland news stations dubbed stories on 3/4-inch to
some other format, such as the ACR 25, whenever possible and perhaps as much for the
quick lock you mention as well as any issue of reliability. A lot of old
guard egineers in stations of all sizes thought of U-matic, as it first arrived
on the scene, as a step backward: head switch in the picture, reduced

resolution, alias products, transports using record changer technology, etc.
It took a while for some guys to appreciate the power that came with the
portability.

created a real logjam, since so many of the edited pieces arrived as
the TD was rolling the machine!! ;-)

We handled our 3/4 stuff directly to air from four 2850's, each
with a dedicated remote controller and CVS TBC...
It was fun!!
