D2 was the first pre read machine wasn't it, only the pre read edits never
worked in the UK

You could not time them up to mix from one machine to the other

 

During the punk rock error 70's there was  Razor blade style  jewelry around
so if you could edit

You were entitled to wear a silver razor blade around your neck

Like the RAF do with wings on their uniform when they can fly

Beats a medallion any time

 

Love the picture, the idea of 2" editing in a restaurant  ......

Yes, 2" audio edits were precarious. Even D2 and Digital Beta do not have
perfectly seamless audio edit capabilities. You can adjust the audio edit
characteristics (via menu setting) to sonically improved the edit though. 

 

Continuos bass notes were the worst (piano, for example).

middle of a sustained musical note like an oboe or similar sound.  You may
get one between words, though.  I havent' tried it with D2 or any other
digital machine, but I still don't hold any hope.  Perhaps someone on this
list might try it.  Most of the editing at CBS has not been done on music,
mostly cuts, like 60 Min, 48 Hours, etc.

I recall reading a number of Ampex mod bulletins pertaining to audio insert
editing issues, with and without editec. I still have some of those NBC/CBS
traded memos for the early production VR 2000's.
